My Oma will always be my favorite person in the entire world even though she passed away in May of 2005. Sometimes when I start to miss her or I miss her cooking I break out some of her recipes that she wrote down before she passed away. As many people know, lots of the older generations never wrote down their recipes, leaving the rest of us amazed on how not only they remembered so many recipes for so many different dishes, but saddened how we can never replicate them.

This cake by my Oma is one that has survived her passing and it is one of my favorite things to make because it is so versatile. The cake recipe is plain but can be doctored up with fruit and cinnamon, this one that I made was a cinnamon plum Oma cake.

My kitten Gracie decided to watch, and wait for a piece of plum to fall on the floor. For whatever reason, my cat likes canned plums.

I make the cake by mixing together butter, sugar, milk, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, flour, baking powder and salt. (the recipe is at the bottom of the post)

I get my canned plums from Aldi, a discount grocery. They are seasonal so when they come around I buy them out.

The only downside about the plums is the pits are still in them, so you have to take all the pits out.

But if you intend to serve this to your mother in law don't cut out the pits, leave them in and let her eat it and crack her teeth and just play stupid. It would be worth it. Trust me. Anyway....

You start layering the plums on top, I also did mix some more plums into the cake because I like lots of plums.

And when your done layering it will look something like this:

This is the finished product took about 50 minutes to bake because my stove isn't that good, but it works so I can't complain. The picture does it no justice, the smell is really what is amazing.

In case you are interested here is the recipe:
1/2 cup melted butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup milk
1 1/2 cups flour (sifted)
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt

You can layer on or mix in every kind of fruit imaginable, canned fruit works really cook, I like to use canned cherries and plums. If you'd like a cinnamon cake add a 2 teaspoons cinnamon.

Preheat your own to 350, bake it on the top shelf for 40-50 minutes depending on your oven.
